How to Use Squarespace to Create a Beautiful Photography Website That Actually Gets Noticed

If you’re a photographer like me, you know the struggle of getting your work out there in a way that truly does it justice. You spend hours perfecting shots, editing with care, and pouring your heart into your art, but then… how do you get people to see it? For me, creating a website that not only showcases my photography but also drives traffic was key. Squarespace has been my go-to platform, and here’s why (and how) it can help you build a stunning photography website that actually attracts visitors.

Why I Chose Squarespace for My Photography Website

There are a lot of options out there, but Squarespace stood out for a few reasons. First, I needed a website that looked professional but was easy to manage. As a photographer, I’d much rather spend my time behind the camera than wrangling website code, and Squarespace makes it simple to build a gorgeous site without technical headaches. Plus, it’s loaded with built-in SEO tools, which is essential for getting my work seen in a competitive online space.

Step 1: Choosing the Perfect Template

Squarespace offers tons of beautiful templates, and for photographers, they really deliver. You want a template that puts your images front and center without distracting clutter. I recommend looking at templates in the "Portfolio" or "Photography" categories. Originally, I went with a template that allows me to showcase my work in high resolution with minimal text and distraction, but over time it evolved into my own style and no longer resembles the template at all. Choose one that reflects your style, whether it’s clean and modern or artsy and bold.

Pro Tip: Make sure your template is mobile-friendly! Many people will stumble across your site on their phone, so you want your photos to look stunning on any screen.

Step 2: Organizing Your Gallery Pages

One of the best things about Squarespace is how easy it is to create galleries. For a photography website, galleries are everything! Think about the different categories of your work: weddings, portraits, landscapes, or even black-and-white photography. You’ll want to create individual gallery pages for each category to make it easy for visitors (and Google) to navigate your site.

SEO Tip: Use descriptive titles for your galleries and photos. Instead of naming a gallery “Portfolio,” consider something like “Wedding Photography Portfolio.” This will help potential clients find you when they’re searching for specific types of photography.

Step 3: Adding SEO-Friendly Text to Each Page

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) might sound intimidating, but Squarespace makes it easy. When you create each page on your site, you’ll want to include a short description that tells visitors (and search engines) what that page is about. I recommend keeping it conversational and authentic, like you're speaking directly to a potential client.

For instance, on my “Wedding Photography” page, I include a small blurb that says, “Capturing authentic, timeless wedding photos in Middle Georgia, South Carolina, and beyond. I specialize in both film and digital photography, creating images that preserve the beauty and emotion of your special day.” It sounds natural, but it’s packed with keywords like “wedding photography Middle Georgia” and “film and digital wedding photos.”

Step 4: Blogging for SEO (and Fun!)

One of the best ways to bring traffic to your site is by starting a blog. I know, I know—blogging can feel like a chore, but it doesn’t have to be! Think of it as an extension of your art where you get to share stories, showcase shoots, and offer tips for clients. For instance, you could write about:

Step 5: Integrating Social Media

Squarespace makes it super easy to connect your social media accounts, which is a huge plus for photographers. You can add links to your Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and any other platform where you share your work. Personally, I’ve found that a strong Instagram presence complements my website perfectly. Squarespace even has a feature to pull your latest Instagram posts directly onto your website, so your audience can see your freshest work.

SEO Tip: Link to your website from your social profiles to create a network of connections back to your site, which helps boost SEO.

Step 6: Optimizing Image Titles and Alt Text

As photographers, we know how powerful visuals are, but search engines need a little help to understand them. Each time you upload an image to Squarespace, make sure you’re adding SEO-friendly titles and alt text. Instead of something generic like “IMG_001,” name the file something specific like “Middle-Georgia-Wedding-Photography-Film-Digital.jpg.” Alt text should describe the image in a sentence or two. For example, “Bride and groom embrace during golden hour at a wedding in Macon, GA.” This helps search engines understand what’s in the image, boosting your chances of appearing in image search results.

Step 7: Creating a Clear Call to Action

Every page on your site should have a clear call to action (CTA). Whether it’s “Shop Now,” “Contact Me,” or “View My Portfolio,” make sure your visitors know what you want them to do next. Squarespace makes it easy to add buttons that stand out and lead visitors to your contact form or booking page. For instance, after showcasing my wedding gallery, I include a button that says, “Ready to book your dream wedding photography? Contact me today!”

At the end of the day, your photography website should be a true reflection of you and your work. Squarespace offers so many customization options that you can create a site that’s as unique as your art. Spend time on the design, write authentic copy that sounds like you, and don’t be afraid to experiment with new features. Building a website takes time, but if you keep it genuine and optimized for SEO, you’ll have a site that not only looks incredible but also gets noticed by the people who matter—your future clients.
