Tips for Capturing Concerts on 35mm Film: Shooting Knocked Loose with Kodak Tri-X and P3200

When I first picked up my trusty 35mm film camera and set out to capture the raw energy of a live show, I had no idea the experience would be as exhilarating as it was. The band in the spotlight that night was none other than Knocked Loose, a hardcore band that I’ve been a fan of for a long time who are known for their intense performances and electrifying stage presence. With their aggressive riffs and powerful vocals, Knocked Loose has carved a niche in the hardcore scene, captivating audiences worldwide.

The Film Choices: Kodak Tri-X and Kodak P3200

For this shoot, I chose Kodak Tri-X and pushed to 3200 and Kodak P3200 pushed to 6400. These film stocks are renowned for their ability to handle low light situations, making them ideal for concert photography.

Kodak Tri-X Pushed to 3200

Kodak Tri-X is a classic film stock with a storied history in the world of black and white photography. Pushing it to 3200 ISO enhanced its grain structure, adding a gritty and authentic feel to the images. This film's versatility in various lighting conditions allowed me to capture the dynamic range of Knocked Loose's performance, from the subtle nuances of the band member’s expressions to the frenzied energy of the crowd.

Kodak P3200 Pushed to 6400

Kodak P3200 is specifically designed for low light conditions, and pushing it to 6400 ISO amplified its capabilities even further. The result was a series of high-contrast images with pronounced grain, perfectly encapsulating the raw and unfiltered essence of the concert. This film stock allowed me to freeze the chaotic moments, highlighting the band's powerful stage presence and the crowd's enthusiastic response.

Tips for Shooting Concerts on Film

Capturing a live show on film presents unique challenges, but with the right techniques, you can create stunning images that convey the energy and atmosphere of the show. Here are some tips for fellow photographers looking to shoot concerts on film:

  1. Know Your Gear: Familiarize yourself with your camera settings and film stocks. Concerts are fast-paced, and there's very little time to fumble with equipment.

  2. Use Fast Lenses: Opt for lenses with wide apertures (e.g., f/1.8, f/2.0) to allow more light into your camera, crucial for low-light environments.

  3. Push Your Film: Pushing film increases its sensitivity to light, making it possible to shoot in dim conditions. However, this also increases grain and contrast, which can add a distinctive aesthetic to your photos.

  4. Embrace the Grain: Grain can enhance the mood and feel of your concert photos. Embrace it as part of the artistic process.

  5. Focus on Composition: Pay attention to the composition and framing of your shots. Capture both the band and the audience to convey the full experience of the concert.

  6. Be Patient and Observant: Anticipate key moments and be ready to capture them. Concert photography is about timing and being in the right place at the right time.

  7. Experiment with Angles: Move around the venue to find unique perspectives. Low angles can make the band look more imposing, while high angles can capture the scope of the audience.

The Knocked Loose Experience

Photographing Knocked Loose at The Eastern in Atlanta was nothing short of an adrenaline rush from start to finish. Known for their intense and high-energy performances, the band has a reputation for creating an electrifying atmosphere that pulls the audience into a whirlwind of sound and emotion. As a hardcore band, Knocked Loose delivers a sonic experience that is raw, unfiltered, and profoundly visceral.

The Venue: The Eastern, Atlanta

The Eastern in Atlanta, with its state-of-the-art sound system and intimate setting, provided the perfect backdrop for capturing the raw energy of Knocked Loose. The venue was packed, a sea of eager fans waiting for the first chords to erupt from the speakers. The dimly lit space was a challenge for any photographer, but I was armed with my 35mm film camera and a determination to try my best to capture the essence of the night. The anticipation in the air was palpable, and I knew this was the perfect opportunity to push my film stocks to their limits.

The Performance

As Knocked Loose took the stage, the crowd surged forward, and the energy in the room reached a fever pitch. The band launched into their set with ferocious intensity, and the mosh pit exploded into action. Every song was a cathartic release, with vocalist Bryan Garris commanding the stage and delivering powerful, guttural screams that resonated throughout the venue.

The challenge of shooting in such low light conditions was immense, but it also added to the thrill. Using Kodak Tri-X pushed to 3200 and Kodak P3200 pushed to 6400, I was able to capture the frenetic energy and chaotic beauty of the performance. The grain from the high ISO film stocks added a raw, gritty texture to the images, perfectly complementing the band’s hardcore aesthetic.

Post-Show Reflections

Photographing Knocked Loose at The Eastern had been a test of my skills and an unforgettable experience.
